Be Thou My Vision – Fixing Our Sight on God

God is not the giver of blessings; He is the blessing. God is not the enabler of accomplishments; knowing Him is the accomplishment. God is the center of our provision and the center of our ambition. And yet why is that so easy to say and so hard to do? We fix our sight on God.

One of my favorite hymns is the Irish “Be thou my vision”, its words are attributed to Dallan Forgaill in the 6th century and its tune an Irish folk song, “Slane”.   The theme is that God alone should be the vision and goal of every Christian, just as He was for Paul in Philippians 3:7-14.

What does it mean to have God for our vision in our purpose for life?

The modern mantra of finding ones’ purpose for life seems to be “follow your inner star”, “find your dream” or “do your own thing.”  The idea is that within each person is something that will guide him or her to meaning and fulfillment in life if only he or she follows it.  Books, music, and movies parrot this idea relentlessly, and many people simply accept it as truth.  Under certain assumptions this could be logical:

“Haves and have nots” or “Do and do nots?”

have nots

Our acrimonious political debates often center on class struggle, those who “have” against those who “have not.” Perhaps the conflict is really between those who “do”, who contribute to wider society, and those who “do not,” who take without giving.

The 2012 Presidential Election campaign is in its final weeks, and while one candidate seems to relish contrasting the “haves and have nots”, the other candidate recently implied that the real division is between the “do and do nots.” One group seems to boil with resentment against those who they perceive have more than they do. Another group seems to boil with resentment against those who they perceive do less than they do. Is either narrative accurate? Are both narratives accurate but incomplete? The debate is not limited to candidates or even parties; large swaths of the American population seem to feel the same way. The structure of the human body can shed light on these questions.

The human body

The human body is made of billions of cells, the building blocks of life. The cells are fundamentally the same, including parts such as the nucleus, the cytoplasm, the mitochondria, and the cell membrane. There is also diversity amidst the unity, with cells of hundreds of types and functions, including muscle cells, bone cells, hormone secreting cells, nerve cells, skin cells, fat cells, and many others. They are arrayed in a system of incredible complexity, and work together with precision to accomplish the purposes of the body. The human body is a truly magnificent creation.

Are Drugs Addictive?

Are drugs addictive

My daughter, newly gone off to college, had heard in her classes that drugs were not addictive. Are drugs addictive? Yes. Here is my answer:

By Mark D. Harris

Her question

“Random question, I have a friend here who believes that most drugs are not actually addictive, is that true?… They said that especially weed was not addictive at all.”

My answer

Let’s set about answering it. First, as always, we must consider our definitions. I assume that when speaking of drugs you mean non-prescription use of generally mind altering substances (such as alcohol), some of which are often illegal to possess or use (such as cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, etc). If your friend has a different definition of drugs, please let me know.

Are We Special?

Are we special

We are special, each and every one of us. But we are not special because of what we have done. We are special because of what God has done for us. Are we special? Yes.

My daughter is a freshman in college and one of her assignments was to watch a YouTube video showing a high school graduation address entitled “You Are Not Special.” She watched it and sent the link to us, asking what we thought. Hopefully my reply will be of some interest to any of the 1.7+ million viewers of the video who also happen to read my blog. The link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lfxYhtf8o4.
